The new Neve 1073 plug-in really shows off how successful the Unison impedance matching is in a big, big way, especially on dynamic and ribbon mics. The one difference that surprised me here was that with a Shure SM7 on vocals, I did notice that the Apollo Twin-1073 actually exhibited a bit more headroom before driving the input compared to the hardware. Side by side: the EQ To my ears the biggest difference between the two units was in the EQ section (confirmed by UA, who note that the modeled 1073 and 1073N do sound slightly different), but more in settings over tone. In some instances, most noticeably the low end, when setting the controls equally it was a tad sonically off in terms of weight. By Paul Vnuk Jr. One of the highlights of Universal Audio’s Apollo Twin interface/DSP Engine (reviewed August 2014) is its Unison preamp technology, also found in the original 8-channel Apollo. Unison uses software coupled with physical hardware to emulate the sound and characteristics of vintage mic preamps. Unison starts with a clean, uncolored microphone preamp of UA’s own design. Then, through the magic of circuit modeling, you can inject the colors found in the modeled preamps into your sound. However, unlike a typical plug-in, this all happens at the input stage, not in the DAW, and it’s not only a software process. The preamps in the Apollo and Twin are digitally controlled and designed to alter not only their gain staging, but also their impedance, to match the original hardware’s specs.

So how do the two compare? First, it’s not air, but a slight 2-3% intangible high sweetness, that I heard in the hardware at times. There was also a slight difference in low-mid weight, with the plug-in being a hair more forward-feeling and the hardware just a tad fuller, yet more laid back. Much of it was only noticeable when tracks were mixed together; in blind comparisons it was often a case of “did I really hear that?”. All in all, this is some of the closest modeling I have heard from UA to date, maybe even better than the Massive Passive Plug-in (reviewed February 2015) which is a personal favorite. The Legacy 1073 model was created with a linear approach that is accurate, but does not offer the non-linearities of the circuit design. These nonlinearities give the new model a more analog sound, especially when pushed into saturation and distortion. Also, the input control of the Legacy plug-in was a simple gain knob, whereas the new version is 100% accurate to the hardware in function and design. In use I started by taking the 1073N out for a spin along with a Chandler TG2 and a Great River MP-500NV, just to get my own personal bearing on the “Neve 1073 sound.” I quickly learned that the 1073 is everything you have read over the years.

I dial in some settings and he may nudge things up or down, depending on the kind of vocals he’s tracking. The history of the Neve 1073 goes back to the summer of 1970, when Rupert Neve & Co. Delivered a model A88 console to Wessex Sound Studios. Not only was it the first 24 track desk ever installed in London, but it came complete with a special upgrad, the newly designed 1073 mic pre/EQ channel input module. The first rock group to record on this console was King Crimson, who made their third album in a row at Wessex, the controversial album Lizard.

These overtones were tweaked to perfection by Andrew Scheps himself, resulting in beautiful and authentic saturations. Whether used for recording, mixing or mastering, Scheps 73 lets you enjoy all the warm tones of a fabled piece of studio hardware, in-the-box!

What made the original 1073 stand out was the tone. Thick and warm with a mid-forward presence and a smooth top end, it created a tone that sat beautifully in the mix. As Rupert himself admitted, this was mostly due to the input and output transformers. The input transformer was manufactured by Marinair (Radar) of Harlow, UK, and later by St. Ives Windings (now Carnhill). The output transformer was developed for over a year prior to the release of the 1073, and was co-designed and manufactured by Marinair. The 1073 was another step in the evolution of mic preamps found in vintage Neve consoles.

(The folks at Universal Audio disagree, saying the transformers are actually among the most linear, best-behaved components in a very complex circuit.) The original transformers were made by Marinar. As popularity grew a second manufacturer, St. Ives, was brought on board to help with the increased demand. All 1970s-era units will include one or the other, and while I have seen online debates as to whether one is superior to the other, they are essentially the same design. Current production units use transformers made to the same specs in the original St. Ives factory, now doing business as Carnhill. Controlwise the 1073’s mic pre starts and ends with one single knob.

It SOUNDS magnificent.. I have been really enjoying the sound of this new 1073!! It sounds so much better than the (now) Legacy version that it has actually made me angry a few times.. BECAUSE although it sounds phenomenal, she's a pretty aggressive resource hog.

My August review had me comparing my own SOLO/610 pre (reviewed January 2007) with the company’s UA 610 Tube Preamp & EQ Plug-In Collection; I was quite pleased with the “feel” and reaction time of the plug-in models, which did a great job of capturing the spirit and vibe of the classics — so much so that for those tracking sessions I stayed with the new 610-B model for the whole session. In every instance the basic controls are unchanged. On the 1073N, the pad, impedance switching, +48V Phantom power, ground lift and such are located on the rear of the unit.

The 1073 EQ The original Wessex EQ, as some call it, is a 3-band semiparametric EQ with an additional 5-position hi-pass circuit. The first control is a single variable grey High Shelf knob offering ±18 dB at 12 kHz. This 12k sparkle and sheen is one of the 1073’s most famous features. Next is the Midrange band, which uses a dual concentric pot. The stepped outer ring selects between frequency choices of 360 Hz, 700 Hz, 1.6 kHz, 3.2 kHz, 4.8 kHz, 7.2 kHz, and an Off position that disengages the band. The variable inner knob boosts or cuts the chosen frequency around ±15 dB. The Q is self-adjusting and gets narrower the more it is pushed.

The Neve 1073 was one of the first EQs to be modelled by Universal Audio for its Powered Plug-Ins range many years ago, but due to the technological limitations of the time, it didn't capture all the non-linear characteristics that give the original its gorgeous sound. This earlier, less DSP-intensive version is included in the new Neve 1073 Preamp & EQ Plug-In Collection as the 1073 Legacy plugin, as is the even more DSP-friendly 1073SE Legacy version. 'It not only emulates all the circuit interactions of the hardware, but also the preamp characteristics when used with an Apollo audio interface' The headliner in this latest Plug-In Collection for UAD-2 platforms (VST/AU/RTAS), then, is simply called 1073. The long-throw output fader adds colour- useful for a bit of overdrive. One caveat is the enormous DSP demands of the new 1073, consuming 40% of a single UAD DSP chip per mono instance, and 67.6% for a stereo one. If you're recording through it as a Unison input stage, it's not so bad, as you only need to record through it once. But if you intend to mix with the plugin in your DAW, when using, say, a UAD-2 Duo unit, you'll only be able to run 4 mono or 2 stereo instances (though the EQ section can be disabled to reduce DSP usage). This new 1073 is a huge step up from the original UAD model, and not just because it simply sounds better, but also for the inclusion of the Apollo input preamp stage, which really is a potential game-changer. The range of analogue colours it paints is vast, and its sonic clarity and depth are fabulous.

To the people who are giving this 1STAR! The people who are giving this 1STAR are the idiots who don't know how to use this properly! This isn't a plugin that you want to use everywhere you go. Well not the new 1073 as it will kill your DSP resources really quickly.

The Pre with Neve EQ made every mic sound amazing. This is great to use in UNISON on the way in, if you just want some Neve EQ in a mix use the 1073SE Legacy that comes with the bundle and save DSP. UA Prices on plug-ins in the store will drop based on what you already own, causing some confusion. UA should fix this and just show 'PURCHASED' instead of the reduced price or 'UPGRADE' instead of buy now to minimize some of these bad reviews on an excellent plug-in.

Almost Like the Real Thing Hello ladies and gents! What is cool to me about owning a UAD-2 is that I get access to a lot of the great gear a mix artist would use to mix a record, and with the Apollo series I get some very nice emulations of gear a recordist would use to record a record. With the 1073 Preamp and EQ--I find it interesting that people are using this to MIX, as this piece of gear is a workhorse for recording; knowing the power load of the gear in the real world (Neves take the more power than most gear--hence why Neve 500 series are not as beefy) it cracks me up that it is killing the DSP. Suggestion: Print the sound of the 1073. That is how recordists do it in the real world. Use SSL to mix.as SSL is the big record MIX sound.
