Another problem was with the singing aspect of the game. I was excited to try the voice feature, which allows players to sing the lyrics into the microphone of an iPhone, but after my friend’s enthusiastic attempts at a Pat Benatar tune ended abruptly, it became clear that Rock Band Reloaded is still working out a few bugs. The game would often crash or end a song prematurely even if the player hadn't actually failed the level. I was pleasantly surprised at how enjoyable playing Rock Band was on a handheld screen.
I preferred the song choices for Rock Band, though to their credit there have been quite a few additions to the online music library with more being put up all the time. It would be great to be able to import tracks from Rock Band onto the new game. If you have the original, I'm not entirely convinced that landscape mode and live vocals would be enough to tempt you to upgrade. Another niggle is that shaking the iPhone to activate 'star power/overdrive' (a big point multiplier) seems to have become a lot more difficult this time around, meaning that you're more likely to lose accuracy with the buttons while you're shakin' it like a polaroid (no they don't have that song.). Still, those minor quibbles aside it's a very accomplished game for a very reasonable price.

Hitting a note a touch early or late was consistently forgiven, and I got the points anyway. I suppose this is beneficial to players like me (whose reflexes are less than cat-like), but the Rock Band veterans are likely to be frustrated at how easy even the expert level can be.

I got pretty good quite quickly at the old Rock Band on iPhone, but Rock Band Reloaded is quite a bit tougher to master. They've introduced a new 'expert' difficulty level (which is insane), and also ensured that you can't whizz through all the levels ridiculously quickly by forcing you to up the difficulty on the higher levels, and sometimes dictating which instrument you have to play. This game has a lot more legs than the last one. One thing which makes the difficulty that bit higher is the obscurity of some of the songs. It's widening my musical boundaries alright, but it would be nice to have just a few more crowd pleasers in there.

This seems to have split the gaming community, with some avidly opposed to the change, but others welcoming it enormously. I liked it; portrait mode meant the buttons were a little cramped, and I got 'iPhone finger' (a variant on 'playstation thumb') quite quickly. Overall, I wouldn’t recommend Rock Band Reloaded as a replacement for the Wii, Playstation, or Xbox versions, but rather, a travel-sized alternative to the original.
